FCF News Update Page

Deep Springs Elementary

Have you ever wanted to do more than the usual FCF outing? Ever wanted another reason to wear that new article of clothing that you traded for or just made? Well, I just may have the opportunity for you.

Several men participated in an event at Deep Springs Elementary School in Lexington Kentucky. We were asked to set up our lodges and spend some time with their students describing an era prior to 1840. We demonstrated the technique of fire starting, cooking, lamp making, weapons and what a pre 1840’s lodge may have looked like on the frontier.

Several groups of children were excited to see our lodges as they arrived for school. They knew what the day would bring. They understood they would be able to take a step back into history with us as we described our area or certain skill. The students liked starting a fire with flint and steel and the stories that were told by the lamp maker. We were fortunate to be able to share some of the different types of weapons that were used as well as the tales that were shared along the way. The storyteller had a special flare for keeping the students’ attention. The occasional shout could also be heard when the students were treated with an opportunity to actually feel a coyote hide.

The amount of information conveyed to the students was done with great care and desire to share what we have come to love as Frontiersmen. Everyone had a wonderful time, sharing the past with our future.

Smiling Bear (Jess Craig) presented the lodges
Broken Ankle (Gary Hicks) presented fire starting
Old Beor (Henry Measle) presented lamp making
Running Buck (Dave Rooney) presented weapons
Running Horse (Brian Jones) presented cooking

There is always an opportunity to share history and His Story with others. This is an ongoing project with others in the planning stages. Make plans now to join us for the next one!
